Dr Jo Saele

Jo was born in Bergen, Norway, and then raised in South Wales where he became fluent in Welsh. He then graduated with a bachelor of dental surgery with honours from Cardiff University in 2014 (BDS (Hons)). Jo is currently registered with both the General Dental Council, United Kingdom (GDC) and the Irish Dental Council(IDC). During his time studying at Cardiff dental school, he was awarded with the ‘Margaret Probert Prize’ for obtaining the highest mark in his class. He then went on to be awarded the ‘DTR medical innovations award’ at the All-Wales Medical symposium post qualification in 2014 for his work in teaching and research in life saving biopsy techniques.

The early years

Following qualification, in 2014, Jo obtained further training in non-surgical facial aesthetic treatments at the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) in London. During the same time, he embarked on further training in orthodontic treatment using both clear aligners and fixed brackets where he is now a certified comprehensive Invisalign provider. During his early years of practice, Jo had worked in a busy mixed NHS and Private practice in the heart of Cardiff city centre where he provided general dental treatments as well as a range of cosmetic treatments to suit the needs of his patients. In 2018 he completed a yearlong postgraduate training programme in placing dental implants with Guys College, UK. Following this, he then completed a clinical externship at the Prosthodontic and Periodontal departments in the University of Minnesota, USA.

Clinical doctorate and specialty Prosthodontic training

Having provided a comprehensive and wide variety of dental treatments for his patients to exceptionally high standards Jo embarked on further postgraduate education, where he focused his skills on fixed and removable Prosthodontics and implant surgery. Here he began a 3-year full time speciality training programme in Prosthodontics at Trinity College Dublin, where in his final year, he achieved first class honours in his examinations. During his time at Trinity college Dublin, he has carried out research into the oral health of elite athletes in Ireland. Regularly working with professional sports teams across Ireland as well as Irish Olympians with Sports Institute Ireland, he is looking to publish his findings as part of his clinical doctorate (D.Ch.Dent.) at Trinity College Dublin. In addition, he has carried out postgraduate training in conscious sedation, using both inhalation (nitrous oxide) and intravenous (IV midazolam) in Ireland.

Here and now

Jo now practices as a Prosthodontist, in the United Kingdom, working on the most complex full mouth rehabilitation cases, severe wear, full mouth rehabilitation with dental implants, cosmetic smile makeovers and leading multi-disciplinary cases to effectively plan cases involving different specialties. He also takes time to lecture and educate both dentists and undergraduate trainee dentists here in the United Kingdom and abroad on topics such as severe wear, dental implants, removable prosthodontic treatment and dental photography.
